The game of spoof which apparently originated in China thousands of years ago, is played as follows;
- Players place up to three coins in one hand
- Each then has to guess the total number of coins held by all the players before the hands are revealed
- no player can guess the same total as any other player
- points are awarded to the winner of a round (which is called a school) and it falls to the loser of the "school" to pay the stipulated stakes, which can be to buy the next round of drinks
Spoof is played all over the world and on 5th November 2010 the 28th World Championship was hosted by the Chapter Arms.
Eighty four spoofing specialists from every corner of the globe, each sporting a garish blazer and bow tie, took part.
The final was between England and Holland, with Holland taking the title.
The landlord, David Durell, started spoofing around 36 years ago hundreds of pounds have been raised for the Wooden Spoon – a rugby charity which helps mentally and physically disadvantaged children-through these events.
The Kent spoofing championship is to be held at the Chapter Arms in the spring and next year's World Championship will be held in Auckland, New Zealand during the Rugby World Cup.
